IPL 2023: 67th Match CSK vs DC: May 20, 2023

CSK

Gaikwad and Conway play key roles in Chennai Super Kings’ commanding victory

Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad had a fantastic batting performance in Delhi, taking advantage of the favorable batting conditions. Their partnership helped Chennai Super Kings (CSK) dominate the match from beginning to end, resulting in a convincing 77-run victory. This win secured CSK a playoff spot and the second position in the standings.

CSK’s next match is against the defending champions, Gujarat Titans, in Qualifier 1, which will be played at their home ground, Chepauk.

On the other hand, it was a disappointing end for the Delhi Capitals. Throughout the season, only David Warner showed consistent form in the top order. His innings of 86 runs off 58 balls had some thrilling moments, particularly against Ravindra Jadeja. However, the collapse of wickets around him limited the impact of his performance.

The pitch was dry, as noted by both MS Dhoni and Warner, leading to an early introduction of spin in the powerplay. However, CSK’s aggressive approach in the early overs indicated that the pitch was better than expected. Devon Conway hit the season’s 1000th six in just the second over. Both Gaikwad and Conway kept the momentum going, scoring runs quickly. Gaikwad reached his half-century in 37 balls and continued his aggressive batting.

In the death overs, Conway accelerated towards his century while Dhoni promoted himself to No. 4 in the batting order. Ravindra Jadeja also played a quickfire innings, hitting three fours and a six. CSK finished their innings with a formidable total of 223 for 3.

The Delhi Capitals started their chase poorly, losing Prithvi Shaw early. Deepak Chahar took important wickets in the powerplay, slowing down the Capitals’ progress. Warner, however, found his rhythm and targeted Jadeja’s bowling. He reached his fifty off just 32 balls and continued to attack.

As wickets fell around him, Warner kept fighting, but the required run rate had become unattainable due to the slow start and bowling struggles. When Warner was eventually dismissed, it seemed like the game was over. In the final over, bowler Maheesh Theekshana took two wickets in two balls but narrowly missed out on a hat-trick. CSK secured a significant boost to their net run rate.

Overall, CSK’s dominant performance and the collapse of the Delhi Capitals’ batting lineup led to a convincing victory for CSK, ensuring their place in the playoffs.
