IPL 2023: 47th Match KKR vs SRH: May 04, 2023

Varun Chakravarthy played a crucial role with his bowling

In a thrilling match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Varun Chakravarthy played a crucial role with his bowling. He bowled three overs (16, 18, and 20) and conceded only 12 runs, taking one wicket. However, four of those runs came from byes and leg byes. KKR managed to pull off an improbable win, securing only their fourth victory in 10 matches this season. The defeat left SRH in a similar position to KKR before the match, with both teams needing to win to improve their chances in the tournament.

During SRH’s chase of 172 runs, Heinrich Klaasen was dominating the KKR bowlers and seemed to be leading his team towards a comfortable victory. However, Shardul Thakur dismissed Klaasen when SRH needed 48 runs off the last six overs. Varun Chakravarthy and Vaibhav Arora then tightened the screws on SRH, with Arora taking the wicket of Aiden Markram in the 17th over. SRH found themselves in a must-win situation, and the match took a thrilling turn as KKR fought back.

KKR’s opening combination for this match, Jason Roy and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, was highly anticipated. However, their partnership didn’t materialize as Gurbaz got out on the first ball he faced. Roy struggled against Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s movement and eventually got dismissed in the fifth over. Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh then began rebuilding the innings for KKR, taking advantage of some wayward bowling from Marco Jansen. Aiden Markram bowled a couple of overs to exploit the left-handers, but it was Kartik Tyagi’s aggressive batting that brought momentum to KKR in the 10th over.

With KKR looking to dominate, SRH brought in Mayank Markande, their top spinner, to apply brakes on the scoring rate. Markram also changed ends and got the important wicket of Rana, who top-edged a slog-sweep. Andre Russell was sent in to face the wrist spinners but fell victim to Markande, getting caught at short third. Wickets continued to fall for KKR, and they couldn’t find the big overs towards the end of their innings. Harshit Rana, a burly fast bowler, impressed with his bowling, and KKR relied on their spinners to restrict SRH.

KKR started their defense strongly, taking early wickets through their fast bowlers, including the dismissal of Harry Brook for a duck by Anukul Roy. KKR’s spinners tightened the screws further, and Klaasen and Markram struggled to find boundaries for 19 consecutive deliveries. Klaasen then initiated a pushback, hitting two sixes in an over from Anukul. The floodgates seemed to open, and SRH scored 49 runs in four overs, reducing the target to 48 off six overs. However, Shardul Thakur struck again, dismissing Klaasen, and Varun Chakravarthy’s excellent bowling choked SRH. Markram’s wicket further dented SRH’s chances, and they couldn’t find the boundaries they needed. In the end, SRH fell short, and KKR emerged victorious.

Final Score

Kolkata Knight Riders      171/9 Sunrisers Hyderabad       (20 overs, Total:172) 166/8
