IPL 2023: 34th Match DC vs SRH: April 24, 2023

Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel’s Spin defended the lowest total of IPL

The Delhi Capitals defended the lowest total in their IPL history, beating the Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven runs in a low-scoring encounter. Dekhi Capitals’ duo spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel had combined figures of 8-0-43-3 to choke Sunrisers in their low scoring chase of 145. Despite a power-packed innings by Heinrich Klaasen, who scored 31 off 18 balls, Sunrisers needed 13 off the final over with Washington Sundar and Marco Jansen at the crease. But Mukesh Kumar kept his composure and bowled a tight over, conceding only five runs and securing the win for the Capitals.
Sunrisers’ chase got off to a sedate start as opener Harry Brook struggled to score runs and fell for just seven off 14 balls. Mayank Agarwal played a more positive innings but the runs came at a premium as Capitals’ bowlers kept the scoring rate in check. Their 38-run stand for the second wicket ended when Agarwal fell for 49 off 39 balls, caught off the bowling of Axar Patel. Rahul Tripathi, who was brought in as the Impact Player for T Natarajan, also failed to make an impact and was caught behind off Ishant Sharma’s bowling.
In the middle overs (7-16), Sunrisers could only manage 58 runs and lost four wickets, while Capitals scored 64 for three in the corresponding phase. After being benched for the previous match, opener Prithvi Shaw was left out of the team and Phil Salt opened the innings. But Salt was dismissed for a duck off the third ball of the match, caught behind off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Capitals’ batting lineup struggled against Sunrisers’ bowlers, with only Mitchell Marsh, Manish Pandey, and Axar Patel making significant contributions.
Marsh got going with four fours off Marco Jansen’s first over but was dismissed in the final over of the powerplay, caught lbw by T Natarajan. Pandey and Axar Patel then put on a 69-run partnership to give Capitals a semblance of a platform for the final flourish. But Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Axar with a seaming ball that dipped on the batsman, while Pandey was run-out in the following over. Capitals lost four wickets in the last 19 balls to finish at 144 for nine, a total that didn’t seem enough at the halfway stage. However, their bowlers stepped up and ensured that they defended the total successfully.

Final Score

Sunrisers Hyderabad       (20 ov, T:145) 137/6
