IPL 2023: 33rd Match CSK vs KKR: April 23, 2023

Maxwell and du Plessis batting set up

The Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders faced off in an IPL match, with the former coming out on top. The Super Kings muscled a record first-innings score at Eden Gardens thanks to Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, and Devon Conway. Rahane smashed five of the 21 sixes scored in their innings, with Dube also getting into the act with two massive hits in the same over. Conway hit a fourth straight half-century and put on a 73-run opening stand with Ruturaj Gaikwad in just 7.3 overs.

KKR’s bowlers struggled to contain the Super Kings’ batsmen, with Conway in particular superb at picking lengths and hitting them square on both sides. Suyash Sharma’s first over showcased all the elements that make for compelling viewing when a legspinner is on, with drift, flight, rip, and turn on display. KKR lost two wickets inside the first three overs of their chase and merely played catch up for much of it, eventually stumbling to their fourth successive loss.

Despite the early loss of Narine and N Jagadeesan, Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana swung hard and connected from time to time. Jason Roy came and was in the attacking mood to hit the ball down, going 6, 6, 6 off his second, third, and fourth balls – all off Moeen Ali. Roy raced away to a 19-ball half-century, but was eventually out to a full delivery that dipped and slid underneath his powerful swing. KKR’s win percentage was so less.

Theekshana’s Sri Lanka team-mate Matheeshan Pathirana sent back Andre Russell, and Rinku Singh did his best to make a half-century of his own, but it wasn’t enough. The Super Kings came out on top, with Rahane and Dube having fun and making the bowling attack look pedestrian.

Final Score

Chennai Super Kings      235 for 4

Kolkata Knight Riders       186 for 8
